Information about Richmond:
Richmond is an historic former penal settlement set in gently undulating country on the banks of the Coal River. As Richmond has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tasmania, its Georgian buildings have been converted into gift shops, Devonshire tea places, restaurants, craft shops, and museums. Richmond Gaol (1825) is the oldest penal institution in Australia. Also of interest are the Richmond Courthouse complex (1826), St Luke's Church of England (1836), St Johns Church, which is the oldest Catholic Church in Australia (1837), and the gracious Richmond Arms Hotel (1888). Luxurious accommodation is available in Richmond.
