Picturesque stopping points at Blackheath, Springwood and Leura enchant visitors while the tourism centre of the Blue Mountains is Katoomba, established in the nineteenth century as a health resort. The Blue Mountains are an easy 90-minute drive from the centre of Sydney. Larger groups and special events have chartered team trains from Sydney's Central Railway, which ranks as one of the most impressive ways to transport delegates and guests. Historically, the Blue Mountains played an important role in the development of the early New South Wales colony. Initially thought to be an impenetrable barrier to western expansion from Sydney, a way over the mountains was found by explorers Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth in 1813. >From the 1870s, settlements established along the mountain line attracted holidaying Sydneysiders - a tradition continuing to the present day. Whether it's in Katoomba or any of the smaller villages, the Blue Mountains provide conference groups with an escape from their hectic office environment. Teambuilding activities in the great outdoors are immensely popular as are such pursuits as 4WD expeditions, mountain biking, abseiling and hiking. Accommodation ranges from quaint bed and breakfast establishments, to eco-friendly resorts and upmarket international-class hotels. For short-break getaways or intense business meetings and conferences, the Blue Mountains hold a wealth of opportunities. The choices are as limitless as the wide blue horizons.
