Powerhouse of excitement

One of Asia's most exciting destinations, Hong Kong is a visual barrage of neon lights, bustling streets and high-rise towers arranged around the spectacular setting of Hong Kong Harbour.

Hong Kong was ceded to the British by China in 1841 after the Opium Wars. It emerged as a regional financial powerhouse in the post-World War II period and despite the return of Hong Kong to Chinese governance in 1997, that situation shows no sign of abating.

Most major international hotels are represented in Hong Kong with their properties located either in Kowloon, on the Chinese mainland, or on Hong Kong Island (referred to as Kowloon-side or Island-side respectively).

Special theme events such as the dai pai dong food markets recreate the vivid excitement of local Hong Kong nightlife. Tai Chi, martial arts and ancient tea ceremonies can also be incorporated into conference events.

The opening of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, a fantastically modern building perched on the edge of the Harbour, is one of the largest and most successful such facilities in Asia. It opened in 1988 and was expanded in 1997 at a cost of HK$4.8 billion.

For a very special Hong experience, try the Star Ferry, which has been running between Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui at Kowloon for more than 100 years. The ten-minute trip is a spectacular way to experience the real Hong Kong and, at a cost of only HK$2.20, is one of the city's best bargains.

Hong Kong also serves as the gateway to China with air services available to Beijing, Shanghai and other regional centres.
