provides a splendid canvas on which >> Conference venues in the Snowy Mountains of NSW.
Cooma is the centre of the Snowy Mountains. In 1949 it became the organisational centre of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which brought together workers from some 27 nations. The Snowy Mountains can be easily accessed by road from Sydney and Melbourne, or by regular air services to Cooma. Some of the 19 Snowy Mountain Scheme camps dotted around the region, including Perisher, Guthega and Smiggin Holes, later became ski resorts. Ski lodges started to open in the early 1950s and today Perisher stands at the heart of these ski areas. The Skitube operates year-round, beginning its journey from Bullocks Flat near Jindabyne to its first stop at Thredbo. The Swiss-style rack rail train travels through the longest train tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere. At its deepest point, its 550 metres below the surface. The Skitube terminates at Mount Blue Cow, the States newest ski resort and located 1875 metres above sea level. Catering strictly to day-trippers (there is no overnight accommodation available), it is a joint venture between a private company and the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.
