Interstate tourism is set to boom from mid 2005 when Virgin Blue and Jetstar both begin direct flights from Sydney. With some 40 kilometres of beaches along its coastline, the region is the gateway to the unique World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, which shelters the north-facing waters of Hervey Bay. An aquatic playground, the bay is ideal for swimming, fishing and boating. Visitors flock to view the wide variety of marine life, including the humpback whales as they make their annual migration along the coast between July and November. Nearby Hervey Bay are the beachside communities of Burrum Heads, Toogoom and River Heads. Maryborough lies to the south, while such small communities as Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach and, inland, Blackbutt and Kingaroy, give visitors much to explore. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, measuring 184,000 hectares and stretching 120 kilometres. Its abundance of expansive beaches include the aptly named Seventy Five Mile Beach along the eastern coast, while lakes, creeks and towering rainforest give it an amazing diversity. Fraser Island has the second largest concentration of lakes in Australia after Tasmania, with more than 100 freshwater lakes. GREAT FACILITIES
