Meeting In Norfolk
A
conference held on Norfolk Island is likely to be unforgettable for many
reasons.
This tiny island, about 1,600 kilometres north-east of Sydney, is best
known for its spectacular scenery and amazing history.
In 2006, Norfolk Island will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the landing
of the Pitcairn Islanders, descendants of the infamous HMS Bounty mutineers.
Every year, on June 8, Norfolk Island celebrates Anniversary
Day (also known as Bounty Day), and this year will be one of festivals
and events.
The island is home to 1,800 permanent residents, of which 35 per cent
are Bounty descendants. Many of the islanders preserve their Pitcairn
heritage and speak the distinctive traditional language (now called Norfolk)
passed down from the mutineers and their Tahitian wives. Norfolk Islanders
also have their own unique cuisine, and visitors can sample local dishes.
Some things on Norfolk Island have changed little over the years, but
meeting the demands of its growing tourism industry has meant that a wide
range of services and most modern comforts are now available.
Norfolk Island has three major conference venues, and more than 40 places
to stay. Attractions include spectacular scenery, tax-free shopping and
extensive convict ruins.
There are many things to keep convention delegates busy, from soft adventure
and historic tours to snorkelling, diving and glass-bottom boat trips.
Norfolk Island has one of the worlds most southerly coral reefs.
Around one third of the island comprises national parks and reserves,
with many sign posted walking trails offering breathtaking views. There
is also a golf course on the island.

All visitors travelling to Norfolk Island must have a valid passport and
return airline ticket. Australian citizens who do not have a passport
can obtain a Document of Identity through the Australian Post Office.
Australian and New Zealand passport holders can enter Norfolk Island without
any further documentation. All other international passport holders must
be able to obtain visa for entry to Australia prior to entry to Norfolk
Island.
Frequent airline services are available between Norfolk Island and Sydney,
Brisbane and Auckland. |
