Victorian Goldfields

GO FOR GOLD

The Goldfields in Country Victoria may not offer the instant riches that so tantalised the miners and prospectors of the mid 19th century, but that era has left many treasures for everyone to enjoy at a fraction the cost.

Much of the activity occurs around Ballarat and Bendigo, where the legacy of the boom years is mostly measured by the fine public and private buildings.

Sovereign Hill at Ballarat has long been recognised as one of the world’s great outdoor museums, where the hustle and bustle of daily life in the 1850s is recreated everyday by a small army of townspeople dressed in period costume.

There’s the chance to pan for gold in the diggings, and at night there’s the “Blood on the Southern Cross”, show which recreates Australia’s only significant act of rebellion at the Eureka Stockade in 1854.

At Bendigo, you can sink more than 20 storeys into the earth to discover the conditions that gold miners worked under in Australian mines in the recent past. You can also visit the Central Deborah quartz reef, climb ladders and drill for gold.
