The Murray RiverOLD MAN RIVER The mighty Murray River is woven into the historical fabric of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, and continues to play an integral part in the fortunes of these states. The 2,600 kilometre-long rivers role as a highway for the transport of people and agricultural products into the heart of the nation may have diminished, but the blend of outback experience with the romance and thrill of river travel is as popular as ever. Much of the action is centred around Echuca-Moama, once a bustling river port straddling the Murray, less than three hours drive from Melbourne. Mildura, too, is well worth a visit, and youll find some excellent accommodation options on our page for Murray River accommodation. Theres plenty to do in and around Echuca, but a river cruise on an historic paddle-steamer has to be a top priority. With some of the cruise vessels dating back almost a century, there is no better way to gather impressions of this unique slice of Australia than by climbing aboard. Theres no shortage of cruise options and theyre at the river port for the choosing. The worlds largest red gum forest is located nearby, with a two hour cruise through the wetlands to observe the spectacular birdlife one of the best ways to enjoy it. The area is also well known for the quality and variety
of its golf courses, so if youre a player, dont forget your
golf bag. For kids of every age, theres go-kart racing, tenpin bowling and rollerskating to ensure only the fondest memories. |
