VictoriaMelbournes character has a lot to do with a population drawn from some 100 nationalities and this generates an intense pride and sense of ownership. A big convention or conference belongs to all of Melbourne and the population seems aware of the economic benefits that these corporate travellers bring in. Melbourne is easily accessible by air with the Melbourne International Airport, located some 25 kilometres out of the city, handling some 17 million passengers each year. Through a series of well-connected freeways and motorways, the trip to the centre of the CBD takes just 30 minutes. |

Australian Capital TerritoryEasily accessed by excellent highway systems from Sydney, Melbourne and other regional centres is the city of Canberra. Canberra Airport is just 10 minutes out of the city with air links from around the country. There are numerous reasons for holding events in Canberra. Its a rational choice for the association market while corporates also find it enthralling to base their conferences and meetings so close to where the national agenda is established. Yet, with its outstanding range of venues and facilities, politics is no longer the prime reason, Canberra shines in its own right. |

QueenslandWith its grand array of venues and facilities combined with an enviable track record for meetings and events, Brisbane is shaking off its small-town reputation. Any conference organiser considering the Queensland capital for an event can rest assured that if size matters, Brisbane hasnt yet seen a challenge it couldnt meet. In 2003, Brisbane attracted almost 17,000 delegates and their families for the 2003 Rotary International Convention. The Commonwealth Games will again call Brisbane home in 2006. |

Northern TerritoryThe Outback has been seen as a mysterious icon, far away and difficult to reach but an increasing number of conferences are overcoming their destinational inhibitions. The result is that most Northern Territory conferences tend to exceed their expected numbers as Australian delegates see a perfect opportunity to realise their dream. The opening of a purpose-built convention centre in Alice Springs, another planned for Darwin in the coming years and superb meetings facilities available at Uluru and on the edge of the Kakadu National Park, there has never been a better time to visit. Aside from touring all the regions great natural wonders and exploring Aboriginal culture and heritage, theres much to be done in the Northern Territory that cant be done anywhere else. |

South AustraliaKnown as the City of Churches, the appeal of the South Australian capital is now considerably wider. It can be called the City of Festivals with eagerly anticipated regular events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts, the Adelaide Fringe Festival and WOMADelaide. The wine districts are readily accessible from Adelaide, while the National Wine Centre lies on the edge of the CBD and is a great tourist attraction as well as being popular for corporate events and functions. It can also lay claim to being the City of Meetings. Adelaide Airport, from which flights to most Australian capital cities and regional centres depart, is just 7 kilometres from the city centre. Adelaide is also a stopping point for three of Australias best-known train services The Overland, The Ghan and the Indian Pacific. |

Western AustraliaPerth is a great place for a conference or meeting with prices considerably cheaper than the eastern states, yet with facilities and service standards beyond reproach. The main conference hotels are exceptional and off-site event possibilities include Kings Park, from which visitors get a great view over the CBD and city. To the south is the Margaret River region, home of some exceptional wineries and small, boutique hotels that have won considerable acclaim as executive retreats. The Margaret River region produces some amazing wines and meetings delegates will probably find at least some of their leisure time expanding their knowledge of Western Australian wines. |

TasmaniaHobart is the focus of many large conferences, while Launceston is also very popular. Tasmania is easily accessed, with regular air services between such cities as Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport to Sydney and Melbourne. Conferences to Tasmania have a high spouse or companion component and, increasingly, delegates are taking advantage of the new car ferry services from Melbourne to bring their own transport. |
